Papers, 1761-1890 and undated, include: biographical materials; business corresondence with taxes, estate administration papers, and promissory notes, 1767-1890 and undated; a paper relating to the capitulation of Detroit (Mich.) in 1812; deeds for Lenawee and Sault Ste. Marie counties; personal correspondence, 1810-1819; military letters and orders, 1814-1825; and St. Anne's Church (Detroit, Mich.) account with Jacques, 1770. Most of the papers dated up to 1749 are written in French, afterwards they are written in English.

The original building of St. Ann(e)'s was the first church built in Detroit. The church of French Catholics, its foundation were laid in 1702 on the feast day of St. Ann. The first church was destroyed, rebuilt in 1723, and burned in the Detroit fire of 1805. Another new church was built between 1817 and 1819. Jacques Campau was the first of four children born to Jean Louis Campau (1702-1774) and Marie Louise Robert. Jacques, born March 30, 1735 in Detroit (Mich.) married Catherine Menard (died in 1781 or 1782) on Aug. 17, 1761. They had twelve children. He married Francoise Navarre, a widow, on Jan. 5, 1784.
